-ING PROMPTS

Return

Whilst it is not a good strategy to hold on to ING in the hope of an easy -ING bonus if you do find yourself with ING then it is natural to first look for any obvious -ING bonus play. Maybe you find one but it won't fit on the board. That's when it can help to know if there is an anagram of the word which might otherwise be difficult to spot in isolation, the -ING word being the prompt. Even a common word of unusual formation can be difficult to see without such a prompt. For example with the rack GHINOTT it is easy to unravel HOTTING but it may only be then that TONIGHT is triggered as its anagram. So with this idea in mind we have looked through the seven-letter anagram couplets and triplets for sets where there are -ING words that are likely to be found with one (or more) anagrams that are not -ING(S) forms and are either unusual or difficult to spot. The more obscure -ING words have been excluded unless the anagram is especially interesting.

HOOK LOOK

Return

Remembering hooks can be difficult. You may recall that a word has an unusual vowel extension but was it an I or an O ? Well, there are a few words worth knowing where that particular headache doesn't exist because they can take any of the four main vowels A E I or O as hooks.

Short words that take  -A, -E, -I, -O end hooks:

HO  CAP  MO  LOT  OB  MAN  BUFF  SOL  PRIM TOR

Short words that take

A-, E-, I-, O- front hooks

CH  RES  RE

Note that if the U is included the list reduces dramatically to just:

End hooks:    MO-

Front hooks:  -RE -RES
