WORDS IN THE WILDERNESS

Densil Grempet interviews a top-rated or famous Scrabble player and asks them about their most memorable eight words......here's an extract from his interview with Adam Logan:

Densil: Now there's a thought. Perhaps a new winning strategy could be mind over matter - using supernatural powers to pick the right tiles at the right times. It might be less time-consuming than spending hours and hours learning words. Although I guess the satisfaction of winning games through psychokinesis would soon start to fade. Let's get back to the real world, and your second word, Adam.

Adam: Probably my ugliest-looking word ever was in a club game against Zev Kaufman. I had IILLV??, and used an open P to make PulVILLI to the triple word score for 86 points.  I don't remember anything much else about the game.

Densil: I suspect that may be the lowest probability word to have come up in Words in the Wilderness. With three L's and two I's, there can't be that many opportunities to play it. Having said that, I'm sure there are Scrabble players all over the country who are reading this and saying: "I had a rack just like that only yesterday&ldots;". It's actually much harder to spot unusual words when you have blanks on your rack - it's too easy to be distracted by the more obvious possibilities.

Adam: It's always worthwhile looking beyond the obvious. In a tournament in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1996, I was playing Merrill Kaitz.  Early on I had AEINRTY, but none of the necessary letters for an eight were available.  After contemplating various fishing plays, it occurred to me to look for a nine, and then I noticed an N and a Z with two spaces between them.  This allowed me to play TYRANNIZE for 94.
